Artist's Comments

This is my final for color comp.
I tried to incorporate all the things we "learned" into a coherent composition. We covered line theory, composition, color, form, perspective, figure/ground, and other such color and composition matters.

Most of my focus was on line, because I think line is crucial to the flow and therefore presentation of any composition.
But I did incorporate selective color and made use of figure/ground relationships from a perspective that adds to the composition.

By placing our view both low to the ground and the horizon at an angle, it provides the essence of the figure falling.
The red of the tree draws attention to it's wound, which would otherwise have been lost in the line work of the tree. (Also, reminds me of the Fern Gully tree). The wooden doll is painted so he isn't just base line work, but he is less alive than the tree (as he is made from a dead tree), while the tree is meant to look very alive and moving with lots of gestural line work.

The roots of the tree are dragging the attacking wooden figure doll into the earth, back to where he came from.
We all ultimately return to the earth, in death. He is a generic form symbolic of humanity. Also, because he is wooden and attacking a tree, he is harming one of his own, although their exteriors no longer match; meant to symbolize how our attacking the earth is really us attacking ourselves.

I'm sure there is other symbolism in it, but that's what I can remember.

Time: About 30 hours, possibly more.
Medium: ink and acrylic on Bristol board.
Size: 11x14in

it's incredible babe. absolutely breathtaking. (totally does look like the Fern Gully tree by the way) I wish there was a little bit more color, especially because it's for color comp, but honestly, it's fantastic

Thank you :)
Yeah. I'm hoping she understands my reasoning for extremely selective use of color.

Very impressive. It still amazes me how much time you're able to put in on individual works of art.

I suppose I put a lot of work into my programs, but you more art pieces than I do programs.

it's a risk

Critique went ok. She didn't dislike the selective color usage, but she also didn't like my explanation of the piece. However, she did like her own interpretation without my explanation, so... eh. We'll see.
